About this tool
What is a grid square?
The Maidenhead Locator System divides the world into fields (two letters), squares (two digits) and subsquares (two letters). A 6-character locator like FN31pr pins a station to an area about 5 ร 4 km, which is precise enough for contests, VHF/UHF and satellite contacts.
Beam heading
The bearing is the great-circle direction to point a directional antenna. The long path goes the other way around the Earth and sometimes works better on HF.
